🎤 Elocution: Should Digital Devices Completely Replace Paper Books?

Good morning respected teacher, judges, and my dear friends.

Let me begin with a simple question.

When was the last time you opened a book—not because your teacher told you to, but because you simply wanted to read?

Today, we live in a world of smartphones, tablets and laptops. With just one click, we can access thousands of books, videos and lessons.

So, should digital devices completely replace paper books?

I don't think so.

Digital devices are wonderful tools for learning.

Imagine carrying hundreds of books inside a single tablet!

We can watch an animation of the solar system, listen to an explanation, search for the meaning of a word, or take an interactive quiz—all within seconds.

That is the power of technology.

But technology also has another side.

You open your tablet to study Mathematics.

Suddenly—PING!

A message arrives.

Then a game notification.

Then a video.

And before you realise it, your one-hour study session has become one hour of entertainment!

A paper book never says, “Come and play a game!”

There is another important point—our health.

Spending too much time looking at screens can make our eyes tired and can add to our screen time.

A paper book gives us something different—a quiet space to read, think and concentrate.

There is also something special about holding a real book.

The feel of the pages.

The sound of turning them.

The ability to underline a sentence or write a note beside an important idea.

For many of us, reading a physical book simply feels more natural.

But should we completely reject technology?

Absolutely not!

Digital devices can make learning more interactive and exciting.

A video can show us how a volcano erupts.

An animation can explain how the human heart works.

An online map can take us around the world.

So perhaps the real question is not:

“Paper or digital?”

Perhaps it is:

“Why not both?”

Use a paper book when you need deep concentration and quiet reading.

Use a digital device when you need videos, animations, research or interactive learning.

And let us not forget the environment.

Paper books require paper, while digital devices require electricity and create electronic waste when discarded.

So, neither choice is perfect.

The answer is balance.

My dear friends, technology is changing the way we learn—but we should not allow it to take away the simple joy of reading a book.

A tablet can store a thousand books.

But sometimes, all we need is one book, one quiet place, and a curious mind.

So, let us not choose between the page and the screen.

Let us use the best of both worlds to become smarter, more focused and better learners.

Because books give us knowledge, technology gives us possibilities—and wisdom lies in knowing how to use both.

Thank you!
